Hebert Advances to General Election
Sally Hebert posted a decisive win in the South Carolina Democratic primary on Tuesday, June 9, securing 57.5 percent of the vote in a three-way contest. She advances to the Nov. 3 general election, where she faces Republican incumbent Rep. Gil Gatch.
“I am offering voters a chance to elect a candidate who supports public education, infrastructure funding and increased access to healthcare,” Hebert said. “I want to bring our state tax dollars back to District 94 to raise teacher pay, install new water lines in Lincolnville and improve access to healthcare, particularly for women and the elderly.”
Gatch is a member of the South Carolina Freedom Caucus, an organization launched by former state Representative R.J. May, who was sentenced to federal prison for distributing child sexual abuse material.
Gatch's recent vote to redraw congressional districts in the midst of an election cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Additionally, Gatch's signature was the first on a letter calling for the defunding of South Carolina State University, our state's only four-year HBCU (Historically Black College and University).
In contrast, Hebert supports equitable funding for public institutions of higher learning and understands that the General Assembly has shorted SCSU by $470 million, according to a review by the U.S. Department of Education.
